Week Two

As we move into the second week, I hope that you are becoming more comfortable with the class and Mac. I also hope that you understand the expectations-- both assignments and dispositions. Also, with such a tight schedule, you really need to do your best to get your assignments in on time.

Agenda of the week: You are going to be introduced to the powerpoint, database, and Taskstream assignments. We will also unpack NETS (National Educational Technology Standards) and explore podcasts and other tools. Try to keep up with the journal assignments. The first two are due at the end of the second week.

Journal 2: Klein, J. (2008). Social networking for the K-12 set. Learning & Leading with Technology, 35(5), 12-16. It is in the February 2008 issue of L&L and can be found by going to the ISTE website.

This week's question: What makes a good teacher?

29 comments:

  1. This weeks question is a difficult one because the definition of a good teacher will depend upon individual perception and individual need. In stating this, I would have to say that understanding the individual needs of your students and incorporating lessons plans that will allow students to learn according to those individual needs (though they are in a group setting) would be the primary definition of a good teacher. Of course, it is necessary for the teacher to have specific knowledge in the subject they are conveying. It is also necessary for the teacher to continue to be a lifelong learner because with every new year comes a new classroom and a new paradigm for teaching.

  2. It is so hard to come up with a simple answer, because environment has so much to do with it.What adversities is that teaching facing in their classroom or the school community at large. What are the barriers to learning inherent to the environment. What are the political decisions that are affecting what that teacher is able to carry out in the classroom.. I argee with Noreen's definition, but like the question of what makes a good parent ...there are so many aspects to consider

  3. I think a good teacher is someone who is always learning and is capable of communication. They must be a curious person who actually cares about people. A good teacher should be open minded, and honest with themselves that they do not know everything. It is difficult to define what a good teacher should be, but it is not difficult to determine if a person is a good teacher when you observe them in the classroom.

  4. In my opinion a good teacher is someone who is attentive, giving, and understanding. Someone who isn't concerned with receiving but still gives, someone you can relate to and who makes learning new things fun by using creative techniques. A good teacher should be liked but at the same time respected by his or her students. Also a huge part of being a good teacher is being able to relate concepts discussed in class to an everyday setting so the students can understand it more and use it in the own life.

  6. I think that being a good teacher s a difficult question to answer because it is different for each person and each situation. Being a good teacher requires the ability to adapt and change to your environment and classroom situations. It also requires dedication. Dedication to your students and your classroom, but also dedication to be a lifelong learner as we have talked about so much.

  7. I believe that a good teacher is someone who is invested in bettering not only their students' intellectually but also emotionally. A good teacher is a good listener and is continually learning themselves. Good teachers engage their students by making learning fun and interactive. Students who, themselves, are invested in the subject matter are much more likely to learn. Each educator has a different style, it is difficult to say which is good and which is not.

  8. I think the definition of a good teacher is one who embodies several different characteristics. A good teacher has to have a positive attitude, a multi-tasker, helpful, listener, laughing and loving person. The most important thing that makes up a good teacher though is someone who is always learning and wanting to learn. Teachers also require patience and understanding. I could probably go on forever, because so many things constitute a good teacher.

  9. What makes a good teacher is knowing that you know nothing. Becoming a good teacher is a lifelong process, one that will never end. As a teacher, I will never stop trying to learn and grow the same way the children learn and grow, and I will never stop trying to be better at what I do.

  10. The question is not “what is a good teacher?”, but “what makes a good teacher?”. There are several key essential ingredients such as education, intelligence, creativity, and energy which are a common thread in all good teachers. However, humility, thoughtfulness, and empathy are the characteristics which I see as some of the characteristics which are the qualities that separate the “good” from the mediocre.

  11. A good teacher is someone who loves learning and passing the knowledge on to others for the joy of seeing someone "get it". A good teacher needs to listen to their students to find out their needs and then adapts their teaching to their needs. A good teacher realizes there is always more to learn and someone to learn from. They keep learning and improving so they can always give their best to their students. A good teacher realizes they are going to make mistakes that they learn from to be a better teacher going forward. A good teacher never blames the student or themself. They learn and move forward.

  12. A good teacher must be kind and loving towards all students. A good teacher must know the needs of the students they teach in order to teach to their learning style. It is important for a teacher to prepare lessons that are creative and help the students learn in experiential ways not just head knowledge. A good teacher is always learning and finding ways to be a better teacher.

  14. I think that a good teacher is someone who will do everything in their power to help their students achieve the highest amount of education possible even if it means stepping on other's toes or breaking some of the rules. A good teacher views their profession as the opportunity to impact the world and takes advantage of this fact very day.

  15. A lot of things contribute to making a good a teacher but one of the most important things I think is the ability to convey complex ideas in a clear and concise manner. When teaching a class one the main focus is to help your students learn about subjects that the teacher is already quite familiar with. The students though often have no preconceived knowledge on the subject and it is therefore a difficult processes for the teacher to teach the student these new ideas. This ability is paramount to being a good teach but certainly not the only thing that makes a good teacher.

  16. A good teacher is someone who values knowledge and is eager to share their knowledge with others. Good teachers must demonstrate admirable qualities such as empathy, understanding, and most importantly PATIENCE. Teachers should recognize endless possibilities in the individuals that they teach. It is important to be caring and compassionate, as well as take into account the different learning styles of every student.

  17. As other classmates have mention, it is difficult to answer this question. There is no exact formula on how to be a good teacher. There are a lot of different characteristics that a good teacher will have. First of all, I believe that the parents, the teacher, and the student are part of the learning process, and without the help of one of them teaching becomes difficult. In my opinion some characteristics that a good teacher has are: dedication to students learning, desire to teach and continue education for the benefit of the students, support, understanding, patience, and an open mind.

  19. A good teacher should have patience, a sense of humor, be a good communicator, a good listener, be able to cope with pressure, able to adopt their style to fit the needs of the learner. In this last respect, a good teacher should be a good teacher regardless of the student.

  20. If it hasn't been said already, a good teacher always has to have the best interest of his/her students at heart. This will vary depending on the students' needs and the teacher's philosophy, but for the most part, they will share common trait of enthusiam toward teaching.

  21. I think a good teacher establishes a strong bond of trust with his/her students. Once established the teacher provides, to the best of his ability, to provide tools and pedagogies necessary to convery the material to be learned. The students will must know that the teacher always has their best interest. A good teacher will constantly evaluate what is working and adjust his plans accordingly.

  23. What makes someone a good teacher is something that is hard to define in many ways. When I think about the teachers that had the most impact on me throughout my K-12 years, it is often hard to articulate what it was about them or their process that made learning enjoyable. As is evident by the diverse qualities mentioned in these postings, there are so many things that make a teacher effective and memorable but if I were to nail down one attribute that I think trumps the rest, I would have to say that an enthusiasm for learning and teaching coupled with a genuine interest in helping other people.

  24. What makes good teachers is someone who listens to the students and gives their best effort in trying to understand them.
A great teacher is a leader and follower. They can learn from students and teacher them too. They must be able to manage the classroom and the students. If there is no classroom managment the lessons will be lost.
The good teacher respects the individuality of the students. He/She can motivate or inspire them to reach and succeed or achieve their individual bests. They are able to roll with the punches; meaning teachers must be flexible and adaptable. A great teacher can create a lesson with almost nothing. They develop a rapport and good communicate with their students, other teachers, parents and adminstration. They are a good example to follow.

  25. What makes a good teacher? That is a good question. I believe what makes a good teacher is passion. In any kind of scenario, passion is what pushes someone to greatness. I believe with passion a good teacher will transform the classroom into an experience rather than just the same old get together. Everything else will stem out from there. Passion will lead to great problem solving. It will lead to enthusiasm. I believe that what makes a good teacher is the passion for teaching and the passion for the students.

  26. What makes a good teacher is the fact that they care about there job. Teacher these days that are tenure are their because they can not be fired so they do the bare minim so that they can keep there job. I think that people who really love there job and are there for the kids are the people that make good teachers. This is what I think makes a good teacher.

  27. I think what makes a good teacher is someone that actually cares about their students, not just the job. A good teacher goes above and beyond in their work. They try to help their kids and teach their kids as much as possible, not only teaching within their hours or salary.

  29. Good teachers come in all different types of personalities and styles. If I had to try and identify one common element that goood teachers share it would be passion; passion for their subject and an equal passion for sharing it with others.
I think we all have experienced teachers who had this deep caring for what they were doing, and that helped make them good, effective teachers. And we all have also experienced a teacher who did not have---or lost---this kind of passion, and that tended to render them ineffectual.
