Welcome

Welcome to EDUC422 summer 2009. We’ll be exploring various technological tools for teaching and learning. We will focus on how students can use technology in their learning, in addition to learning how to use these tools in teaching.

The course is intensive because the regular 16-week instruction is compressed into 5 weeks. It can be very challenging and demanding. As a class, we’ll need to help one another.

In the first week, we will get to know the course, discuss the syllabus, learn how to use a Mac, and explore Web 2.0 applications-- blogs, wikis, and social bookmarks-- in educational settings.

Reading and Journal #1:

Johnson, D. (2007). Your Google guide. Learning & Leading with Technology, 34(8), 25-26.

This article is from Learning & Leading with Technology (L&L). You need be an ISTE member to access the article.
For instructions on how to find articles at ISTE, visit our class WebCT. In the Tutorials folder in Course Content. Look for Searching L&L (a PDF document).

Your task this week:
  1. Purchase supplies
  2. Join ISTE & Taskstream
  3. Do EdTechProfile
  4. Post your self-introduction on your blog and read 3 other introductions and give feedback to the authors
  5. Start the Internet (Delicious social bookmarks) and web page (wiki) assignments

This blog serves as a channel of class communication. I will update the class information every week. You need to come here and read the information to stay in the loop. You also need to show me that you are participating in the class by responding to the question of the week.

This week’s question: How do you use Web 2.o? (If you do not have any Web 2.o experience, describe your impression of it.)

  1. I am very excited to learn how to use Web 2.0 . There seems to be so much to learn, and each time I learn something (like creating a blog) it branches off to other areas. I think this will be a lot of fun and I look forward to learning about Web 2.0.

  2. Web 2.0 provides endless possibilities! I think the most valuable will be finding and/or creating an online community as a support system. It both broadens the horizon and shrinks it at the same time. It opens up a whole network of people you might not normally get a chance to interact with-maybe even globally, and it also makes that information available at your fingertips. I am looking forward to many new adventures from my keyboard!

  3. I have always loved research so Web 2.0 is great to find information quickly. I enjoy reading blogs and making our own in class was quick and fun. I look forward to learning many new and exciting things in our class.

  5. It appears that others are confused as to what Web 2.0 is. I have used the computer since the time of punch cards and have adapted to the changes as they have come along. Web 2.0 is only a current status of the web applications. It is not some grand plateau of internet experience. I do hope that this course will allow me to learn the applications of the internet which will provide me with a higher level of competency in mathematics teaching venues or approaches. 6. I noticed yesterday while I was setting up my class blog that I was really tempted to take on a different persona, like I usually do when I'm on myspace or facebook (not directly interacting with people). It made me think about the way we portray ourselves through web apps, and if we do so effectively.

  7. I told my dad today about our blogs. It was so nice to give him my URL so he can observe what I am doing in class. I am so excited about all the different things that I am going to learn in this class.

  8. It is interesting to read all of your comments. I subbed today for elementary. I couldn't help but wonder how the advanced information relates to my kids. I know it is great for the older ones. All of this information is new to me. They came out with computers while I was in high school. I have learned to use certain applications, but I feel I am in the dark ages. Thanks so much for your help and suuport through the learning process.

  9. Although my siblings and most of my colleges and friends use a face-book account, I have to say that I have never used one myself. However, I do frequently use WIkipedia to access information. Additionally, I have visited travel agency sites where individuals are able to comment about specific cruises or trips taken. Web 2.0 is very useful and provides society with endless possibilities. I just wonder why it was not invented sooner?

  11. I am looking forward to having more interaction with Web 2.0. I use Web 2.0 for personal and professional use. There is so much information out there in Web 2.0 and I know that what I know and use in Web 2.0 is small do to the vast amount of informataion. I am very excited and looking forward to everything that I am going to learn.

  12. I use Web 2.0 everyday but in a minimal way. I keep in contact with many of my friends through the social networking site myspace. Other than that, I don't really use Web 2.0 for anything else. I still read the newspaper, and watch the nightly news. I don't blog. The first blog for me was the one we did in class the other day. But after learning more about this "Web 2.0," I'm finding myself wanting to become more involved. I think this class will help me get with the program and become more Web savvy!

  13. Bonnie again, I just read the assignment requirements. Last semester one of the girls from our group used a wiki site to post our group paper. Before then I never used any of this technology. I am just now realizing how it can be used in the classroom and as a personal diary and reference library. My impression, it seems a little over-whelming and exciting at the same time. I am a very visual learner and not having anything in front of me feels a little tenuious and slightly out of my grasp. I have not witnessed much of this information used in the lower grades though and I wonder with my limited exposure if it is beneficial to these students. I know or being to realize from today's lecture there are ways for these sites to be utlized in the classroom. My wheels are starting to turn and I am getting inspired.
I am sure by the end of the class I will have a totally diiferent point of view and I will be able to think ouside of the box. I credit this to learning and understanding... a real eye opener.

I find thechnology intriguing and I see the benefits of its use to teachers. Meaning after setting up what is needed to conduct our class we do not have to reinvent the wheel every year.

I also see if done properly the information can be used as a tutor in the classroom. With all the budget cuts and increasing class sizes we can use extra support.
So far, I like what I see and I am hoping to develop a better understanding or rather a comfort level where I am not intimidated by the vastness of the web's uses and power.

  14. I use Facebook, Myspace and Picasa to link with family and friends local and remote. I use IM,
Skype and Email for communication. I use Monster and other online job search tools. In the past I used earlier versions of WEBCT and other online training tools. In my work, I designed and directed the implementation of an internet-based Work Task Assignment and Tracking system for project control to be used by engineers, managers, testers and trainers, here and in Estonia.

  15. Web 2.0 is the internet but with much more interactive properties. It is more dynamic and interactive than ever before. People use Web 2.0 technologies for mass publishing like blogs, book marks, video showcasing, wikis, tag based delivered media, and social networking. The creation of information is increasing at an incredible rate. With web 2.0 at an increase, products which involve its usage are also at an increase in demand. This means that there is economic interest and opportunities. Since so many people and children are using Web 2.0, it is important that educators and parents make themselves knowledgeable about its possibilities not only to utilize it for education but to prevent the negative aspects of interactive internet as well. These negative aspects of interactive internet are child predators, and phishers of private information.

  17. I am looking forward to learning more about Web 2.0. Already, the class has introduced me to so many possibilities. I am really enjoying the fact that we can all participate in building a wiki site and that we have this class blog to interact with one another. It is an eye opening glimpse into technology of which I was not aware of. I look forward to catching up with what has been transpiring in the world of education and technology for the last few years!

  18. My friend in the Navy encouraged me to try Facebook. I tried it briefly but was deterred after hearing about security issues related to ads on the site. I have used Twitter to follow professional cycling---great for getting to the little details and background of a personal interest, hobby or sport. So, yes, I have been using Web 2.0, not really fully aware that I was already a participant in this new generation of technology application. I love using the Web Applications on the I-phone, which I assume are under the Umbrella of 2.0.

More than anything, however, it occurs to me that kids growing up with this stuff will think differently than I do. After all, there was a time when I thought U2's ZOO TV Tour (1992) was the epitome of technology!

  19. This is the first time I am introduced to Web 2.0. So far I think it is great, and it can be used to effectively teach students. There are a lot of technological resources out there that I was not aware of that this class is teaching me about. As an educator I plan to use the tools that I learn in this class in my future classrooms.

  20. web 2.0 is a huge technological advance that enables students, teacher, employees and people around the world to unite. By using wikis, facebook, blogs people are encouraged to communicate with each other and express themselves. I personally use web 2.0 in the form of facebook and emails which helps me keep in touch with friends and family that don't live in san diego.

  21. I haven't used Web 2.0 before so I am excited to learn how it works and strengthen my computer skills. I also think it will be a great way to teach students.

  22. I love Web 2.0 because it is collaborative. I think it makes learning much more interesting and will be a great tool once I become an educator. Web 2.0 offers a vast amount of resources that I hope to get more familiar with as well as learn about ones I don't even know exist!

  23. It is definitely interesting to see how computers have evolved from being used mostly as tools to create word documents, to being a place where people can create their own websites, download music and videos, and communicate daily with family and friends. Technology is ever-changing, and I have to admit I am a little behind on the newest developments. I am excited to learn more about Web 2.0 because as I always say, computers aren't going anywhere so it benefits everyone to know how to use them to their fullest capabilities.

  24. I use Web 2.0 to navigate around youtube and myspace. I use the Internet to navigate through web sites. I also use web 2.0 to use search engines such as Google and many others. I use web 2.0 currently in my Education 422 class. Overall, web 2.0 is my navigation for the present and future.

  25. I do not use web 2.0 very often and it is something that intimidates me because it is very unknown. I look forward to learning how to take advantage of the technology that is out there. I have already learned so much and it really is much simpler than it looks!

  26. I use Web 2.0 all the time whether it is to check up on the latest news or to watch hilarious you tube clips. I also often watch TV over the internet. I use wikipedia all the time to look up basic information on many different things and I check up on blogs that are of interest to me. One portion of Web 2.0 that i rarely use is the ability to contribute to the online community. I usually only participate in the Online community as a reciever and not a sender.

  27. The term Web 2.0 was new to me when I began this class, but then I realized I'd been using it in a limited way for years. Web sites I've subscribed to such as Weightwatchers.com, Match.com, and classmates.com have a community network fiber. My last major college reunion was planned using a website where former students reminiced and requested various activities for an alumni weekend. I've been invited to parties and events where the guest list has been posted and we can respond so everyone knows who is coming.

I've never used a web site to personally plan an event with others, but the "virtual" meeting possibilities are very exciting. This eliminates "when can we all meet?" and "travel time and food expenditures". The medium allows a tight focus on topic and allows an equal voice to those inclined to contribute.

The Youtube on Wiki posted on the class Web 2.0 page helped me imagine the usefulness of this tool.

  28. I use the internet all the time - mainly for reading news, watching videos on Youtube, email... I was aware of all the Web 2.0 stuff, like podcasts, blogging, wikis, etc, but had never bothered to use them. This course is really good because it encourages us to get more involved with these web technologies. I hope I will continue to use them.

  29. Web 2.0 falls under the category of one of those things that I have frequently used but up until now have not known by name or not known the full extent of its capabilities. Like Michael (and others), I use the internet all the time but in a very basic way. I have serious reservations about the MySpace movement, I think YouTube is entertaining at times and I have not listened to many podcasts. Basically, I think the technology is a great asset when used responsibly and cautiously.
