Week Five

Can anyone believe that we are in our last week of class? I want to thank everyone for all of the hard work I have witnessed throughout the last few weeks. I know that the work has been long and the assignments have been numerous, but y'all have done a great job.

I’ll grade all assignments by July 7th except the last few ones. Ensure you check your grades to find out if you have received credit for all of your assignments!! Let me know of any gaps.

I'd like to cancel the EdTechProfie post-test. You do NOT need to do it again (unless you want to see how much you have learned).

For Monday: Come and grab a camcorder and film your story between 12 and 2. Make sure you bring all that is needed for filming. Come back to UH 271 once you finish the filming. Download the video footage (you need to take turns) and start editing your master pieces. If you forget a particular skill, check out an iMovie tutorial at the class WebCT, in Course Content > Tutorials. You can bring a headset.

Please update your tracking sheet.

For Wednesday: We will continue working on the video project. Then we will submit key artifacts to Taskstream and provide evidence for meeting (most parts of) TPE 14.

For Monday, July 6: If we finish everything on Wednesday, this can be an optional class. For those who have finished everything, you don’t necessarily need to come. For others, please come for the last minute help.

Journal 7 & 8: You may search L&L, T.H.E. Journal or any other appropriate site to find and read two articles on something that relates to technology and education.

Remember that July 10th is the absolute due date for everything.

Week Four

I'm sure many of you are feeling overwhelmed, but we are almost finished!! Hang in there. There are only a few more new assignments left. I realize that it is difficult to get everything completed in such a short amount of time, but y'all are doing great!

Last Week: Finish your Graphic Organizer (Inspiration) assignment and collaborative Digital Citizenship/ Copyright assignment (newsletter).

This Week: On Monday we’ll start software reviews, work on the tracking sheet, and plan for the video project. On Wednesday, we will film the video stories and start editing the video clips using iMovie. The video project is partly group work and partly individual. Your group will develop a storyboard and write the script as well as film your story together. Then individuals will edit the same footage but apply personal styles. We’ll also revisit NETS-T and Taskstream. Finally, the database assignment is canceled.

Week Three

As we enter the third week, we’re approaching the half-way point of this course. Then we’ll be going down the hill. Superb!! In the first two weeks, the technology tools and assignments might not be challenging because many of you already know about word processing, PowerPoint, Excel, and Web authoring. But some of you might be feeling overwhelmed with the amount of work in this intensive course. Just hand in there and remember to ask for help.


This Week:
We’ll be learning about spreadsheets, Inspiration (and Kidspiration), and digital citizenship. We will also start planing for the video project. These programs can be powerful tools for teaching and learning. You should also work on the PowerPoint and Journals/Blogs assignment.

Journal 3:
Mishra, P., & Koehler, M. (2009). Too cool for school? No way! Learning & Leading with Technology, 36(7), 14-18. This article is in the May 2009 issue.

Journal 4:
We are going to move outside of L&L for Journal 4. This journal comes from a magazine called "T.h.e Journal," which is a complimentary magazine when you join CUE, or Computer Using Educators (You don’t need to join CUE to access the paper. I have provided the article at WebCT). It has some great articles and is another resource for reading fun. For journal 4, I want you to read the article, "Moderating and Ethics for the Classroom Instructional Blog," by Paricia Deubel. The article is available at the class WebCT.

How would you define technology? When you see this term, what comes to your mind?

You need to respond to the weekly questions to receive some credits for the "Participation" category. A brief response (one paragraph) is good enough.

As we move into the second week, I hope that you are becoming more comfortable with the class and Mac. I also hope that you understand the expectations-- both assignments and dispositions. Also, with such a tight schedule, you really need to do your best to get your assignments in on time.




Agenda of the week: You are going to be introduced to the powerpoint, database, and Taskstream assignments. We will also unpack NETS (National Educational Technology Standards) and explore podcasts and other tools. Try to keep up with the journal assignments. The first two are due at the end of the second week.

Welcome to EDUC422 summer 2009. We’ll be exploring various technological tools for teaching and learning. We will focus on how students can use technology in their learning, in addition to learning how to use these tools in teaching.

The course is intensive because the regular 16-week instruction is compressed into 5 weeks. It can be very challenging and demanding. As a class, we’ll need to help one another.

In the first week, we will get to know the course, discuss the syllabus, learn how to use a Mac, and explore Web 2.0 applications-- blogs, wikis, and social bookmarks-- in educational settings.
